A bass player was asking about the best tone for his playing and he was not sure how to choose the right model.
We have a webpage that provides a description and a reference on our “Model’s sound” /eng/sound.htm But to figure out how to “express a tone” in words is difficult. So we stepped forward. I asked a great bass player friend, Sandro Filippi, to play clips on a few Bass models adjusted properly for comparison: Same pickups, same circuit (passively), same strings, same string height above the pickups.
Models were choosen for their features to explain tone effects given by chambers, weight and wood density, as the necks are basically the same.
Marco Buzzaccaro with his simple, plain, clean sound philosophy hosted the recording at “Le Casette” studio here in Schio,
The basses were routed thru a BAE 1073 preamp, to Apogee Rosetta converts to file, without any compression, just a limiter for fewer high peaks that would have reduced too significantly the level of clips…..to avoid clipping.
The result is here /eng/sound.htm#Bassessoundcomparison
The differences between the series-parallel and split connections of each pickup can be easily evaluated, as well as the nuances in sound.
Best of all, the dynamics of each sound are audible and provide the listener with a better understanding of each model’s character.
