On the occasion of the Milan Guitar Show, I decided to work on a new idea I had been thinking about for a while.
I wish to make instruments completely of Italian woods.
In the past I had made some all Italian wood instruments using hard Italian ash bodies or some Semiacustica guitars with Italian poplar bodies.
But in this case I was looking for an alternative to korina (limba) which is becoming fashionable again for guitar bodies. Even traditional original users of limba have begun using it again, causing it to become very scarce and even now a wood to speculate on. So the supply is shrinking very fast. I started using limba in 2007 when it was very plentiful and nobody was using it much. But now I feel it is time for a change.
In the past I have used Italian sycamore for production of certain models in the 1990’s. I had just a small stock that I used to build a few bodies. The results I remembered were very good. But sycamore is not a commercial wood and not widely available. BUT, now I have found a very good source, so … here we are.
The results both for guitars or basses is wonderful. Sycamore resonates very well and provides very desirable tone, balanced and bold. Perfect for offering a mahogany kind of tone but with an extra growl. Perfect to sit in between poplar and heavy ash.
So now we have the perfect all Italian wood combinations. It’s here to stay!
